Presenting R2D2!! My first Star Wars cake. Paul (my husband) requested this for his work Party for today, so last night i was up late late making, baking and decorating my cutest cake to date, or at least i think so but then i am a BIG Star Wars fan. He is Chocolate Fudge cake with orange butter cream frosting. I cant wait to hear what Paul's co-workers have to say about this, it sure does blow the cookie cutter cakes they make in the grocery stores out of the water wouldn't you say. I sign off by saying to you Happy Making, Baking and Decorating!!
Here is a very yummy cake i made for Dena, requested by her Husband for her Birthday/Mothers Day. But Shame on me I didn't check very very carefully and just notice yesterday that i spelled Birthday with out the H on the tag :( Well you live and learn right. I made a deep chocolate cake with premium quality chocolate and made chocolate Mousse which took 1 hour to make, 45 of those minutes were spent constantly stirring the egg yolks and milk on low heat until they boiled, but it was worth it, the finished product was AMAZING so light and very rich with out much sweetness. I had great fun making it.
Last Thursday night i went to a friends house to partake of her Card making class. I also wanted to do a practice run for a cake that a man had ordered from me for his wife's Birthday. I found a beautiful picture of the cake i wanted to do on cakecentral.com so i printed it out. I made this particular cake rich red velvet with vanilla buttercream filling and frosted with chocolate butter cream. Then i used Pirouette cookies to cover the out side of the cake, almost looking like flower stems, then put on some very colorful large silk flowers on top, and a cute green ribbon around the cookies to finish the look of a bouquet of flowers. The kids at my friends house stayed up past their bed time because they wanted cake and my friend was too scared to cut the darn thing, hahaha. Come on it does look awesome if i say so myself ;-) I am just loving this new adventure my life has taken on.
My son Jacob who is in Kindergarden (Prep for my Aussie peeps out there) had a class presentation on American Hero's last Thursday. Each parent was asked to bring along a food item for the "After Party", oh yeah these are party hard kids, hehehehe! Well i said i would bring not hard to guess.....a cake :-) I wanted to make a cake along with the theme of the event, so i used a cake i was already starting to decorate in my Wilton class and stripped it of its girly flowers, finished doing the not so great job on my first time swags around the cake, then used Clipart and found a silhouette of George Washington and cut it out of MM fondant. It was a chocolate fudge cake with chocolate butter cream filling and frosting, i didn't get to imaginative there this time. I did have fun decorating it and was even more delighted to see the looks on the parents faces when they saw it. Hope you like it.
A lady from my fitness center asked me to make a cake with Sonic the Hedgehog on it for her son's 15th Birthday. This is how it turned out, NOT TOO SHABBY!!!! (Insert ear to ear smile). Its 2 8 inch yellow butter cakes with vanilla frosting and filling, with yellow candy melts on the sides. I hand molded Sonic from MM Fondant and Gum paste, i semi copied a cake some one had made with the exact same Sonic from cakecentral.com I deliver it tomorrow morning, I'm looking forward to seeing what she thinks when she sees it, i hope very happy :)
Hubby bought me 50 cake boxes and made me an excel page with all the ingredients for all the recipes i have to calculate the costs of each cake i make. He is sooooo awesome and supportive, makes this sweet journey all the more sweeter.
My friend is giving her 5 year old daughter a Bird themed Birthday party this Saturday, and i asked if i could make the cake. I looked all over the internet to see cakes with Birds on them but couldn't find any that i liked, so i was and still most likely am going to make an Enchanted Tree Cake, as it has 2 blue birds in a nest at the top of the tree. It's from Debbie Brown's book "Enchanted Cakes for Children" i bought it and it get's here Thursday, si i will see how hard it is and decide wether to do it or not.
I did how ever make this extra cute, cute, cute did i say how cute it is Love Birds Cake. I have a Sugar Motifes Bible for cake decorating book, and it had a picture of 2 tiny blue love birds, so i took the idea and ran with it, it turned out agan SUPER CUTE :-)
Not bad for my 3rd Fondant cake i think.
I will sign off for now, i am baked and decorated out for today.
What fun! We covered a cake with Fondant in Class last night, i made a very dense and moist Carrot/pineapple cake with whipped orange butter cream filling and under-coating. In class I covered the cake in Pink Fondant and made the lavender drape, i did make a handkerchief but didnt like it so took it off when i got home. You can see where i took it off but because of the flowers and hearts all over it your eyes doesn't really draw to it.
When i got home and went to bed all i could dream about was finishing the cake, so at 2:30am i dragged my butt out of bed and went and made the flowers and leaves, then went back to bed at 4:30am then got out of bed again at 8am and finished it. I had some clear sparkle cake gel so i painted all the decorations with it. It made it look awesome if i say so my self. My Oh SO Flattering friend calls me the Cake decorating Diva or Queen, yeah i can live with that title i think :-) and i better keep her around so she can keep the compliments coming, i like an inflated ego, its an independent proud Spanish women thing.
The answer, drum roll please............. READING THE INSTRUCTIONS, or in my case being an idiot and NOT READING THEM. In my very crappy defense and i do mean crappy, i thought to my self "cake on a stick how hard can it, i mean i make awesome Shish-Kabobs ". Now i am hearing Martha Stewart in my head saying "Baking is a science, careful measuring, careful instruction". Inner Martha Bugger Off you know it all kitchen queen!! Now because i have become wise (just a few minutes ago) in all things Bunny Cake Pops, i will attempt to redeem myself from today's ending result my Demented Blob Bunnies (pictured above), to make ones that look half decent and actually stay on the stick, hehehehe : ) Even though they look scary and you think if you ate one it would gnaw its way out of your body, my husband said they tasted awesome but now he feels sick because he ate tooooo many and they are Very, Very sweet, so just one of my Demented Blobs (because they are huge) is more than enough. I will make them much smaller tomorrow. Till then Happy Making, Baking and Decorating!
I dove in head first, that's usually how i do things, my big Spanish/Australian/American head first hahaha. I used a Marshmallow Fondant recipe i found at this link http://whatscookingamerica.net/PegW/Fondant.htm I was really surprised at how easy it was to make but i have made lots of bread from scratch so the kneading part was easy and a lot of fun. I split the finished Fondant in half and used Wilton Gel Frosting Colors to color one portion with brown and the other with black. I have heard that you need to use a LOT of the black Gel to get a black color but it was not true in my case, I only used 4 tooth pick dips of the black gel wiped on the fondant then kneaded through to get my final product you see (if i can figure out how to get a photo on here, nope not a computer savvy person) in this Easter cake.
I made a Butter Cake from here http://www.wilton.com/ it made my house smell divine and my husband sampled the cut offs and said it was the best he had tasted, Oh yeah I'm AWESOME!!!
But........I did cheat on the frosting under the fondant, I used the Wilton White (Vanilla) Frosting that comes in a small bucket for $12, of course you can make it for Much cheaper but since i had been having Butter Cream malfunctions with my last few batches, i thought i would give this a try. It took me an hour and a half to cut out each tiny circle of fondant and put it on the cake but the effort was well worth the outcome. I finished by piping vines, leaves and flowers i had just learned to make in my Wilton Class just a few days earlier all over the cake to signify new life. I hope you like my first Fondant Cake it was sooo much fun to make :) And it makes me so happy to be giving it to our Churches Easter Sunday Breakfast, who said you cant have cake for breakfast? Silly person who ever it was ;)
I love my world to be sweet and to share the goodness of that with other people. I am slowly inching my way into the baking and cake decorating arena, and so far LOVING it. I use my friends and family as test subject and have not had any casualties but rather very happy success. I am a family women with an amazing and supportive husband and 2 adorable, adventurous boys. I live to see people smile and when i see that i have done that when i delivery a special sweet treat to someone, i know I am on the right track.
